They say you can’t have it all in one horse… Tow Mater might just prove them wrong.
Some horses are pretty. Some are broke. Some are safe. Tow Mater happens to be all three—and then some. He is the kind that is becoming harder and harder to find: safe enough to trust with the little ones, broke and handy enough for an experienced horseman to appreciate, and handsome enough to turn heads everywhere he goes. Tow Mater truly is the best of both worlds—the kind of horse everyone is looking for, but very few are lucky enough to find.
Tow Mater is a stunning 10-year-old bay gelding standing 15 hands tall, with all the shape and bone in the world you could ever want. Horses like him are few and far between. You can search for years and still not find another with this combination of versatility, honesty, natural ability, and good looks. He is the type that catches your attention the moment you walk into the barn, but once you get to know him, his looks quickly become the least impressive thing about him.
Looking for the perfect horse is difficult—but Tow Mater is about as close to perfect as you could find. You will drive the wheels off your truck to try and find another like him! From ranch work and trail riding to packing the little ones around and being truly grandma-safe, he checks just about every box imaginable in a horse.
Tow Mater is the ultimate trail, ranch, and family horse, with the experience, training, and demeanor to suit just about any rider. He has the buttons, athletic ability, and training that an experienced horseman will appreciate, while still being kind, honest, forgiving, and dependable enough to confidently take care of beginners and children. He is the go-to horse in my barn for everyone in my family, and it doesn’t matter who climbs on his back—he adjusts to his rider and takes care of them.
We are not afraid to turn the smaller kids loose on him. My 5-year-old niece can confidently do just about anything she wants with Tow Mater without any issue. He will even stand there patiently and let her do his “makeup” 😂—he truly has the patience of a saint when it comes to the kids.
The older kids have loved taking him out on the trails and to play day shows, and he has given them countless miles of confidence, experience, and fun in the saddle. He is the kind of horse that lets kids be kids and simply enjoy riding because you aren’t constantly worrying about what he might do next. Tow Mater takes care of his rider, handles all the commotion that comes along with kids, and genuinely seems to enjoy being part of whatever they have planned for him that day.
Tow Mater rides English, Western, bareback, and bridleless. He is every bit as enjoyable in the arena as he is outside of it and is the type of gelding you can truly take in just about any direction. Tow Mater is athletic, balanced, and carries himself beautifully. He correctly picks up both leads on cue, pivots, side-passes with ease, has a lovely extended trot, and lopes beautiful circles. He is soft, willing, and enjoyable to ride without needing to be constantly managed. He has enough ability and training to be fun for an experienced rider, without being too much horse for someone who simply wants to relax and enjoy the ride.
His ranch experience is extensive, and Tow Mater knows what a real day’s work is. He has been used in every aspect of ranch work, from loading trucks and sorting cattle to doctoring, pasture roping, and penning. He is very cowy, genuinely enjoys working cattle, and knows how to get a job done. When it’s time to work, he is handy, willing, and dependable—the kind you can count on when there’s a job that needs done.
We have put Tow Mater through just about every test imaginable, and he continues to handle everything with ease, confidence, and comfort. Absolutely no silliness whatsoever. He has seen all kinds of everyday commotion and simply takes life in stride.
Kids can play around him, dogs can roughhouse under his feet, equipment can be running, and life can be happening all around him without him coming unglued. He is accustomed to lawn mowers, tractors, farm equipment, semis, traffic, small pets, wildlife, and both small and large livestock. He has also been a huge help when working with and training other colts.
Take him out on the trail and he is just as dependable. Tow Mater crosses water, logs, and bridges, handles rough country, and is comfortable with tarps and obstacles. The crack of a bull whip doesn’t bother him, and neither do the countless other shenanigans we have found to expose him to. He will ride out alone or in a group and is equally comfortable riding through town and traffic.
One of my favorite things about Tow Mater is that he does not require a program to stay broke. Even with extended time off, you can pull him out of the stall or pasture, saddle him up, and ride right off. There is no lunging the freshness out of him, no needing to ride him down, and no wondering which horse you’re going to have that day. He is the same dependable gelding every time you get him out.
Around the barn, Tow Mater is an absolute pleasure. He stalls well, gets along great with other horses in turnout, and is easy to catch. He stands quietly to be groomed, saddled, and tacked, with or without cross ties. He is easy to have around, easy to enjoy, and the kind that quickly becomes everyone’s favorite.
Whether your dream is to trail ride through the Rocky Mountains, have a safe and dependable horse the entire family can enjoy, work cattle, attend play day shows, or step into either the Western or English show pen, Tow Mater has the ability and mind to do it.
He is the kind of horse I would trust absolutely anyone with, and I don’t say that lightly. He is safe, seasoned, dependable, and honest. He has a habit of exceeding expectations, and there are very few horses you can genuinely say that about.
On top of everything else he has to offer, Tow Mater is simply a beautiful individual. His stunning bay color, big round hip, kind eye, plenty of bone, and balanced conformation make him hard to overlook. He has the looks people spend years searching for, but more importantly, he has the mind, training, experience, and heart to back them up.
He truly is the complete package.
I could write a book about this amazing gelding and still probably leave something out, so I encourage you to reach out with any questions. I would be more than happy to tell you more about Tow Mater.
